QStar HSM Technology Overview

QStar HSM Technology

QStar HSM (hierarchical storage management) continues to set the standard for storage management by providing performance and data security for the lifeblood of your business. With thousands of worldwide installations on a wide variety of archival media and operating system platforms, QStar is the right choice for your hierarchical storage management needs.

Multiple archival media surfaces or partitions may be combined to create single or multiple logical volumes that can span both the media and library or jukebox boundaries. With the appearance of a standard magnetic disk, access to the data stored in the volume is entirely transparent to users and their applications.

By providing a mechanism to track media outside of the library or jukebox, logical volumes are able to grow beyond the available online capacity. With the entire file system directory structure cached for easy data selection, prompts are made and email notification can be sent for the retrieval of offline media.

Automatic data migration ensures the data is being stored securely at all times and is available when you need it. QStar's HSM (hierarchical storage management) software utilizes both high speed magnetic disk and secure archival media to provide the optimal combination of performance and security for your data.

Archiving may be scheduled to take place hourly, daily, weekly or monthly and at any particular point in time to suit the business operations, thus providing the ability to tune the system to achieve maximum productivity. A high water mark overrides the schedule to ensure the cache never becomes too full with un-archived data.

QStar HSM is designed to manage all forms of archive media for long-term data retention without regard for hardware platform or operating system support. The data can be seamlessly transported between (14) different operating systems and hundreds of storage technologies, ensuring the long-term access to your archive data.

Connectivity

QStar HSM is available for Linux, UNIX and Windows operating system environments and supports local magnetic disk, RAID, NAS, CAS, Optical (standalone, auto-changer, library) and Tape (standalone, auto-changer, library) storage systems.
